Reiki is a very powerful, but gentle, non-invasive Japanese hands-on healing technique which anyone can learn.
Reiki is basically taught at three levels:- First Degree (Introductory level), Second Degree (Practitioner) and Third Degree (or Master level).
- First Degree Reiki is the introductory level, where you learn the basics and learn all you need to use Reiki for your own benefit and to treat your family, friends and pets.
-
- Second Degree is what you need if you are going to become a “Reiki practitioner”, charging for your services and treating the general public. (though many people who never intend to become Reiki Practitioners embrace Reiki Level 2 as a way of deepening their connection with the Reiki energies. It is a natural progression which allows you to strengthen and focus the energies and also to use them in ways that could never be dreamed of on Level 1).
- Third Degree is the level required should you want to teach Reiki and pass on the beautiful energies and healing techniques to others.
These are very basic descriptions of the levels of Reiki training. There is obviously much more to it and, for many people, being introduced to Reiki can be a life-changing experience.
If all this seems rather daunting, always remember -

We think that most people who learn Reiki are looking for something for themselves mainly, or looking to be able to treat their friends and family, rather than wanting to become a Reiki practitioner and treat the general public. But even so, most people seem to progress to at least Second Degree, and there are benefits in doing so in terms of your own self-healing and self-development, as well as benefits for any people that you treat. Taking Second Degree does not mean that you are obliged to become a Reiki practitioner.
Waiting times between the different levels
Reiki is a practical skill, you get better at Reiki by doing it, by practising it, and to get the best out of your Reiki training you need to have the opportunity to practice what you have learned at each level before moving on.
So, although occasionally we will take students through First and Second Degree courses close together, we do prefer a gap of a few weeks between the two. Similarly, there should be a fair period of time between levels two and three.
Having said that, everyone is different. Some people get lots of practice, others hardly any. Also, some people take to Reiki more quickly than others.
So whilst we do give advice on the timing of courses, together with consultations with Sandy, we tend to leave the final decision up to the individual.
It used to be very simple: there were three levels and the third level – Master level – was what you progressed to in order to teach other people Reiki: “Master” meant “Teacher”.
But some teachers started to split the Master level into two sub-levels:- Master and Master Teacher
So now there might be people who think of themselves as “Masters” although they do not know how to attune people to Reiki yet (they have yet to take their “Master Teacher” level) while other people will be thinking of themselves as Reiki Masters who have completed all their Reiki training.
To avoid any confusion, we follow Mikao Usui's original and traditional method of teaching -
i.e. level 1 - Introductory level - for treating yourself, family, friends and pets.
level 2 - Practitioner level - for treating public and charging for services (appropriate Insurance required).
level 3 - Master/Teacher level - for training others
